On the 26th of May this year, we celebrated Europe Day, marking the 67th anniversary of the 1950 "Schuman Declaration" which laid the foundations of what is today the European Union.

In 1950, on the 9th of May, then French Foreign Minister Robert Schuman presented his proposal for the creation of an organized Europe, indispensable to the maintenance of peaceful relations. The proposal, known as the “Schuman Declaration” is considered to be the beginning of the creation of what is now the European Union with its 28 member countries. The 9th of May has become a European symbol (Europe Day), which, along with the flag, the anthem, the motto and the single currency (the Euro), identifies the political entity of the European Union.

The European Day is the occasion for activities and festivities that bring Europe closer to its citizens and people; it is also one of the annual highlights of the European Union Chamber of Commerce in China. 2017 edition provided as usual a platform for the European, local and international Business community to expand and strengthen their networks in a casual atmosphere.

欧洲日的活动现场,让欧洲更接近其公民, 中国欧盟商会也是一年一度的亮点之一,。中国欧盟商会2017年为像往常一样为本地及国际商界中扩大和加强他们的网络休闲氛围提供一个平台。

Several industries were represented and connected during this event, most of them with numerous actors based in Chengdu itself where the celebration took place, as this city is ranking 3rd international city among the 2nd tier cities in China per CICI 2017 report (Maxxelli) highlighting that “In terms of International Commerce Chengdu scores high, and ranks just behind Guangzhou. Chengdu is home to the highest number of international luxury fashion retailers, international luxury non-fashion retailers, fast-fashion retailers, and foreign operated hotels.” True that among all Hospitality industry had several Hoteliers attending and mingling with all other professions.

With that growing international presence in Chengdu due to Government support since 2000 and also through economical improved growth, the city is actually seeing one of the strongest Hotel developments not only in China but also in overall Asia, with Chengdu being the 2nd largest pipeline in number of rooms in April (5’082 rooms in 21 projects) and 4th in overall Asia-Pacific over that month (STR’s April 2017 Pipeline Report).
